Bal Krishna

Bal Krishna is the childhood name of Lord Krishna and his many miracles are reflected in the Bal Leela from the period of his birth. Right from his birth, Lord Krishna showed many signs indicating his divine being.

On the occasion of Janmashtami here are some of the famous incidents from the childhood of Lord Krishna. Each incident teaches a separate lesson to us and brings us closer to the miraculous Lord Krishna.

Killing of Demoness Putana
According to the legend, King Kansa wanted to kill Lord Krishna at his birth as it was predicted he would grow up to kill the King. So Demoness Putana went about killing all the male infants in Mathura and other neighboring towns in the move to kill the new born Lord Krishna. The Demoness Putana took the form of a beautiful woman and smeared her breast with poison. While roaming from one town to another, she reached where Bal Krishna was lying in the cradle. She then fled with the child and fed Lord Krishna her milk in the vain hope of killing him. Lord Krishna kept smiling and drinking the milk and after a while Putana shrieked with pain. It is said that while sucking the milk, Lord Krishna sucked her life thus killing her.

Overturning the Cart by Lord Krishna
During one of the Lord Krishna birth ceremonies, Mata Yashoda kept the sleeping Krishna under a cart of full milk. After waking up Lord Krishna started to cry for milk but Mata Yashoda couldn't hear him. So Lord Krishna kicked the cart with his feet and overturned it. The pots were shattered and milk started flowing into his mouth.

Displaying the Universe to Mother Yashoda
It is said that one day Bal Krishna was playing and put some mud in his mouth. On getting scolded and ordered by Mata Yashoda he opened his mother and showed her the complete universe in his mouth, the sun, the moon and all the stars, the sky, mountains, rivers, islands, oceans, all the continents, all living as well as non living beings.

Fruit Seller and Bal Krishna
According to a folk story, Bal Krishna went to a woman fruit seller and asked her to give him some fruits in exchange for a handful of grains. The woman took the handful of grains from Lord Krishna and put in her basket and left. On reaching home, the woman was astonished to see her basket full of precious stones and gems instead of grains.
